Use patience, treats for dogs who are reluctant to fix: ask Dog Lady walker

I just read your response to the woman who wrote about her basset hound dog Chester, will only go well with it. I had to laugh because a few years ago, my precious, basset, likes to play the same trick on people. She is excited to be going for walks with my mom or nanny dog while we were on vacation, but, at some point, he’ll decide he is tired and no longer want to run.

Valuable once lay in the mud puddle and refused to budge, forcing women to carry a dog almost a mile to the car. A few months later, she did it to a dog-sitter, a nun who is very tiny, old who thinks he’s worth pain, scoop up and take back home. Talk about pampered pets! –Nothin’ but a Hound Dog

I have been training dogs for nine years, using method-based awards. Your suggestions are usually lean toward that method too, so I was surprised to read Your basset hound owners advising Chester to get a good collar “to draw/training him” because he just wanted to run with the owner of the women and not other members of the family.

Instead of trying to force him to walk with anyone, a better idea is to show why it was wonderful to walk with anyone–put out hot dogs (or other high-level treat) and began to ask him to follow other people on the chain to the short distance to treat. In short, he should be happy as clams goes with anyone, and they can then fade out treats. –Christy

Thanks for the feedback of Chester, the hound did not work out with others but the hostess. And, Yes, dogs do women tell interesting – interesting dog recalcitrant. Forget about it. The Dog Lady was reluctant to recognize a dog chain does not attract the best way to persuade him to move.
